WE DID IT! Our fundraising campaign is now sitting at AUD$1221 - this will cover the cost of the two new toilets and bathroom, as well as the currency conversion and international transaction fees, with a little extra to go towards the cost of providing education, food and healthcare at School of Joy. A massive thank you to all that made contributions, large and small. Together we just made a massive difference to the health and well-being of a bunch of Cambodian kids, their teachers, and contributed to the livelihood to a couple of local builders too! អរគុណឆ្រើន (Thank you very much in Khmer)

More Info

School of Joy is a charity school located in Siem Reap, Cambodia, run by New Bridge Cambodia organisation, a registered charity. I visited Paul, the founder, in Siem Reap in March 2015, who showed me around the basic set-up of the school, their program, balance sheets, and shared the triumphs and the challenges with me. I returned from my trip vowing to assist in any way I could.

We all know how important basic facilities are to maintain good health. School of Joy in Cambodia has appealed to me to help raise funds so they can build two urgently needed loos and a bathroom at their school, which they need to have done in one week! The rainy season this year in Cambodia has been long and prolific, meaning an increase in the risk of disease. At School of Joy, the facilities are currently very basic, with only one toilet, which is located in the same building as the kitchen, where they cook food as part of their food program. An increase in children coming to the school to be educated, to receive a good meal and get basic healthcare check-ups has meant that the current basic facilities are chronically lacking.

School of Joy founder, Phech ChanSokphol (Paul), explains the situation: "Our School of Joy really need the toilets and bathroom for the children and teachers because our old toilet there is only one and very small, it is not so good for the children and very bad for the health. Now it is the raining season very long and make unhealthy and the number of the children now is more than before. One toilet for many children. Some children stay in our school because the home too far away so they need toilets and need bathroom to wash. Kitchen and toilet in same place now so when we are cooking for children to eat very bad smell from toilet and make children and teachers sick."

Please help me raise the money needed to build these basic facilities so that the children can learn in safe conditions, and are happy and well, and thriving as much as children should.

The funds will be used for the following costs:

Builders USD$180

Toilets USD$120

Bricks USD$100

Cement USD$60

Sand USD$50

Doors USD$100

Water tank USD$120

TOTAL USD$730

I have set a fundraising target of AUD$1196, which will cover this amount as well as international transaction fees and rate of the day for currency conversion.

Please give whatever you can. Every little helps!

Thank you ever so much,

Cassandra Newbold from Better World Travel Australia

Update #1

Now up to AUD$1000, not far to go! We would love to go over our target as I hadn't factored in the fee taken by fundly (oops!)
