Hi there! Most of you already know me, but in case you don't- my name is Amee, I'm a junior at Duke University and a member of GlobeMed.
GlobeMed has been one of the most important aspects of my Duke experience. I strongly believe in GlobeMed's philosophy of addressing global health issues through long-term partnerships and community-based initiatives. Even though I am studying in Spain this semester, I still wanted to continue supporting GlobeMed and our community partner in Siuna, Nicaragua. So I decided to combine two of my passions, running and GlobeMed, to help raise awareness and support of the work we are doing.
Over the past 2 years, GlobeMed at Duke has been working with our partner organization, Salud Sin Limites, to support the rennovation of a women's shelter in Siuna. Four GlobeMed students went to Siuna this past summer to start the rennovations. We were so happy to see our work come to fruition when the shelter was officially inaugurated on March 8 (International Women's Day) of this year! Click here to learn more about the shelter. But even though the physical structure is now complete, our work is not done. Salud Sin Limites and the Women's Commission of Siuna will be counting on us to help sustain the services of the shelter.
