This IU Day, we are raising awareness of biodiversity research in Indiana, because resilience is more than the capacity to handle today’s events. It’s also about being prepared for what tomorrow brings.

More Info

The mission of the Environmental Resilience Institute is to develop the forecasts, strategies and means of communication necessary to enhance resilience to environmental change.

We are currently seeking funding to cover expenses such as:

  • field equipment
  • stipends for student researchers
  • improved technology and lab equipment
  • outreach materials
  • wildlife tracking equipment
  • increased aviary capacity
  • general education and outreach

One project currently underway is ERI’s collaboration with the Kent Farm Research Station (KFRS). This was established to provide research and education opportunities that advance knowledge to help protect the billions of migratory animals that offer local and global ecosystem services and ecological engagement.

The research station is also home to the Kent Farm Banding Station (KFBS) which hosts students and community members for various bird banding activities, including the MAPS (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) program. KFBS is located 7 miles east of IUB campus and is housed in a repurposed facility on a 90-acre forested property belonging to the IU Research and Teaching Preserve. Its proximity to IUB and Bloomington makes it accessible to students at IU and Monroe County Community Schools, and to community members of all ages.

  • From humble beginnings in 2015, KFRS continues to grow in capacity, functionality, and research and outreach capability.
  • The banding station (KFBS) joined KFRS in 2017. KFRS is funded by Indiana University’s newly formed Environmental Resilience Institute and the Grand Challenge Prepared for Environmental Change
  • Throughout the year, KFRS hosts IU students and scientists for numerous classes and field activities, including the Biology of Birds course and the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergrads (REU).
