About The Team

LSNA is a safe space for young people of color to reflect on their individual stories and collective struggles. Youth learn tools for self-advocacy and awareness of how history and current social forces impact their lives. Through youth-led action, reflection and research, youth leaders view education as a vehicle for self and community love and liberation.

Update #4

On Saturday on August 12th about 50 youth held a celebration on the 606 Trail to close out our successful summer programing through After Schools Matters and One Summer Chicago. In collaboration with the Chicago Park District we had the opportunity to camp out on the 606 trail which provided support and resources to make this experience happen! Many of the youth, including myself, were raised within the Logan Square, Humboldt Park and Hermosa neighborhoods. The 606 trail which was opened to the public in May of 2015 is a renovated elevated trail that spans 2.7 miles across several neighborhoods that are experiencing varying stages of gentrification. The popularity of the trail as a family friendly green space has quickly impacted the prices of rent and property taxes for the surrounding homes. Thus, displacing many longtime Latinx residents from their homes at an alarming rate.

Since, many of our families are being displaced from our neighborhoods we are fighting to preserve our stories, histories and demonstrate the love that we have within our community. We wanted to disrupt the narrative that many youth of color that live here are disconnected from their communities and other negative stereotypes. Representation on the 606 is important to reflect that this space is not only safe but welcoming to long term residents like our youth.

Our celebration on the 606 focused black and brown joy as an act of resistance. For many including myself, was the first time we were able to experience camping, especially in our own hood. What keeps me grounded while working with youth are experiences where we can unapologetically be ourselves. Experiencing microaggressions, generational trauma, and climate of current social and political state is incredibly hard on youth of color who are trying to navigate the world with limited resources. Joy is part of our healing through the daily turmoil. Cultivating spaces where we can flourish and thrive is how we can preserve our culture while claiming our future within those spaces.

Update #3

Meet our runners for the LSNA Youth Team!

My name is Jennifer Velazquez and this year I am running the Bucktown 5k to raise funds for the Logan Square Neighborhood Association. As a youth organizers, working with the students of Schulz High School has been a great experience. Estudiantes Sin Fronteras has really shown itself to be an important club and I would love to be able to continue educating students and parents on their rights when it comes to immigration. These last couple of months have been full of tension and stress for many but the work I do allows me to wake up everyday knowing I'm making a positive change.

We can't let hate win. Education must be protected and funded, gentrification must seize along with sky rocketing rents and property taxes, and Illinois must commit to becoming a welcoming state for all. This is why I'm running.

Update #2

Meet our runners for the LSNA Youth Team!
Violet Gallardo
As a 16-year old, Violet Gallardo got her first job at LSNA’s youth team. After four years in college, Violet graduated and came back to join LSNA as a youth organizer and to work in the development department. “It just feels really nice to come full circle and to serve my community”, says Violet, who will run in Bucktown with the youth team. “It’s a little rough practicing on Saturday mornings but I really want to start to adapt to a healthier lifestyle, and I’m hoping that practicing for this 5K will be a stepping stone to healthier practices in my everyday life.”
