Leadership Houston Class XXXIII and S.H.A.P.E. Community Center have partnered together to revitalize the community center that has served children and families in 3rd Ward for 45 years by renovating the center's library and computer lab.

About S.H.A.P.E. Community Center

Nestled in historic Third Ward, Houston, S.H.A.P.E. Community Center is one of the most visible, historical, and community-centric neighborhood centers in the Greater Houston area.  Since 1969, S.H.A.P.E. has improved its community through social service and educational programs and activities, which emphasize unity, self-determination, collective work, cooperative economics, creativity, and faith. Over the years, the center has received over 450 awards recognizing its outstanding work and dedication to the community, including the MLK Humanitarian Award, the UNCF Leadership in the Minority Community Award, and the Mickey Leland Humanitarian Award.

Despite the numerous accolades, the infrastructure of S.H.A.P.E. has experienced wear and tear as a result of its decades of service to the community. The center is in need of functional and updated facilities, equipment, and learning tools, which are critical to the center’s continued success.  Two areas of immediate need are the center’s computer lab and library—spaces that are critical to improving literacy and technological skills for future advancement.

The Mission

Leadership Houston Class XXXIII will utilize its expertise and resources to renovate S.H.A.P.E. Community Center through focusing on the computer lab and the library. The class will renovate the computer lab through the provision of new or like-new flooring, ceiling tile, chairs, desks, computers, printers, a projector and a white board. The literacy needs of the center will be addressed by the class through the provision of relevant books for persons of all ages, the creation of a little lending library to be built on the center’s premises, and the provision of new or like-new tables, shelving, and chairs for the library. In revitalizing S.H.A.P.E., Leadership Houston Class XXXIII will additionally solicit local artists to create murals and other various artistic pieces to be incorporated at the center, depicting and memorializing the historic, cultural and community significance of S.H.A.P.E. and its impact on Houston.

Additional structural and aesthetic improvements may also be made to S.H.A.P.E. Community Center subject to available time and resources.
