From Jacki Belli

As a Habitat homeowner of 10 months myself, it is time to pay it forward! I am raising funds to participate in a mission trip in June to help construct a home for someone else.

About Me

Blessed! I am blessed for sure! My Habitat story began in 2016. I was at the end of a 20 year marriage and had been a stay-at-home mom of three children for 17 years. I needed to find employment and God opened a door in 3 days. Over the next several months I secured a full-time job and a rental house. The house was not ideal, but I was proud to be there with my children! Along the way, I worked across from a Habitat build site. That led me to investigate if I would qualify for my own home. After a year of working, paying bills and living life, I was accepted into the program to become a partner family! Over the next year, I shared many hours with family and friends building homes in town and my own. Now I am being called to travel to Trinidad & Tobago to volunteer on another Habitat job site. I also believe that this will not be the end of my Habitat journey. Doors keep opening for me as they have every day since 2016 and I believe my mission is just getting started. As a homeowner, I can testify to the success of the Habitat program. The knowledge I gained from classes attended has armed me for success in life. I want to share that knowledge and the other skills I have to offer a hand-up to many people in my community and beyond. Thank you for your support and I cannot wait to get started!

More Info

Within the Caribbean islands state of Trinidad and Tobago, substantial pockets of poverty exist. Home ownership for those in this economic state can be very hard or impossible to achieve. The rising cost of houses and land, unwillingness of financial institutions to lend, unstable employment, and lack of certificates of inherited land are all major obstacles for many families to get a decent place to live. Those who have managed to secure land often live in self-made, dilapidated homes of old wood and/or cinder blocks. Without the means to repair, improve or expand, families can find themselves in cramped, unsanitary, decaying structures that they call home.

Join Global Village in supporting Habitat for Humanity Trinidad and Tobago’s building program as we work to change lives and communities. Working in partnership with low-income families to build or repair safe and affordable houses helps to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. The reality of meeting basic needs is easily possible once families have adequate living conditions. A place to clean clothes and keep them clean, safely store food, sleep well, meet necessary hygiene needs, build family relationships, and participate in the community all becomes possible with safe, affordable, decent homes.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
