Have you ever gone a day without water?  No bathing, no drinking, no way to grow food, no way to cook  or disinfect common items for daily use?  Imagine you and your child walking miles to a natural spring everyday to gather several gallons of water and carry that on your backs to your house just so you can make it through your day. Now, imagine that this is part of your chlids daily routine.  Oh and did we mention your walk is over a mountainous terrain?  In the town Sitio Iglesia this is part of the daily routine.

The St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish is inviting the Morgan Hill community and beyond you to help raise funds for this project that will bring fresh spring water to the remote village of Sitio Iglesia in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. There are approximately 300 people who live in the village, some of whom walk over a mile over the mountainous region each way, to and from the natural spring to carry containers of water on their backs for their daily use.  If you have ever done this, you know what a trek this is.

About the Fresh Water Project 

Our goal is to build a 2,500 gallon holding tank at the natural spring source. The water gathered will then be piped via gravity feed to a second 2500 gallon storage tank in the village. The entire village will have direct access to fresh water, eliminating their need to walk miles every day to get water for drinking, bathing and washing. This will give them time with their loved ones, allow them to grow crops better, educating their children while improving their living conditions. The Diocese of Huatla has already secured a volunteer engineer and construction workers to help complete the project. The estimated cost of the project from start to finish is $50,000 USD. The majority of the labor for the project is being done by local residents and visiting volunteers from our parish at no cost to the project.

Why this Village/Why Water?

This remote jungle region of Mexico is one of the poorest communities in the country of Mexico. The people of this village have many basic needs, fresh water being at the top of their list. The people of Sitio Iglesia are strong, resourceful, faith driven, and family oriented. The community routinely comes together to work, worship, raise their children, and care for the elderly. Funding this water project will empower the people of Sitio Iglesia to address their basic needs while improving their quality of life.

Fundraising:

The Mission Committee at St. Catherine Parish was formed in May, 2012 to lead the fundraising efforts within our own community. The committee has held multiple fundraising events in order to generate funds.  Although we are growing closer to our goal, we still need your help in reaching the $50,000 USD. Come join us in bringing joy to a town full of people that will appreciate and never take for granted the value of flowing water.
