The National Service Archives will serve as a research tool that will enable scholars, writers, researchers, and the public to study the evolution of national service in the United States and its relationship to American traditions of philanthropy and voluntarism.

In 1993, Congress approved the National and Community Service Trust Act, creating a foundation for national service as we know it today. Since then, more than a million people have served in AmeriCorps, many more have participated in programs for senior citizens, and thousands of schools throughout the United States have incorporated service into their curricula. This record of accomplishment deserves to be documented, both to chronicle the many ideas, people, and efforts that have contributed to the development of national service and to provide important lessons to those who would build upon the programs already established.

The National Service Archives will consist of photographs, documents oral histories, and other content provided by individuals who helped to build national service, participated in AmeriCorps and other programs, led organizations that were part of the national service network, and built the culture of national service.

We are committed to preserving the history of our country’s service and hope that you will help us in our commitment.
