About Me

Global Village & Habitat for Humanity has and always will be near and dear to my heart. As a Board Member for the state of Pennsylvania and Greater Pittsburgh, I advocate for affordable housing - focusing on ownership, fair and equal access to land tenure/ownership in the developing world as well as rights, access to safe drinking water and women's rights.

This will be my third Global Village trip. While there is nothing glamorous about this world travel, the beauty and the kindness of the people always steal my heart. We forget how fortunate many of us are - to live in a free and resource abundant country where brushing your teeth or turning on the faucet for a big drink of water will not leave you crippled and in agony afterwards. Just to even have running water is a dream for so many.

According to the World Bank, 75% of the world’s poor and underserved live in rural areas.  Only 1 in 3 people living in rural areas have access to safe drinking water. The Cambodian government has been divesting in rural water and sanitation facilities resulting in many negative health and economic consequences for the majority of Cambodian families. In health, a 2008 Cambodian government data showed that 74% of deaths in Cambodia come from water-borne diseases. Many of the deaths among children for example, are preventable. In the absence of preventative measures however, a rural household will spend substantial amounts of their income on expensive curative medical costs. In most cases, it has put many rural Cambodian households into a vicious circle of debt to money-lenders.

More than homes, HFH Cambodia provides micro-loans and construction technical assistance focused on the water and sanitation needs of Cambodian families including the building of latrines, wells, and rainwater catchment systems, including installation of water filters, water jars, and connections to safe water.

The Sanitation Innovative Program will bring so many needy people the safe drinking water all humanity deserves. No matter how big or little, a donation to the cause will change many lives.

More Info

More than 25 percent of Cambodians live on the equivalent of less than $1.25 a day. In cities such as the capital, Phnom Penh, they frequently live in squatter settlements and slums; in rural areas, many live in inadequate housing made of bamboo or wooden walls and floors. Access to piped water and proper sanitation facilities is extremely low.

Habitat for Humanity Cambodia, which has been active since 2004, provides families with livelihood training such as agriculture, animal husbandry, business management and other initiatives such as liquid soap production and handicrafts in an effort to increase daily income and family savings. We are working on a five-year initiative that aims to assist 10,000 low-income families.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
