From Ellen Ezzell Holloway

I'm raising money for Habitat South Africa, where I will help build a house this September. I strongly believe in Habitat's commitment to build a community, not just house.

About Me

I'm a lover of justice, women, equality, and children.  My two teenagers keep me flexible, busy, and confused, while my sweet husband inspires me everyday.

I'm not funny, take things literally, and only speak in a group when no one else points out the obvious.  I believe every human has a right to be treated equally, and I fight for those who are disadvantaged, especially children and families affected by communication disorders.

Although a global citizen, I spend most of my time in the deep south, stuck in Atlanta traffic, dreaming of a single-tract road in Britain, passing grazing sheep on a seaside cliff, while actually on a six-lane highway in bumper-to-bumper traffic going 2 mph.  I'm happiest when traveling, and strive to never check a bag.

I believe in the Oxford Comma, don't like beer, prefer Pimm's #1 Cup, have attended 10 Jimmy Buffett concerts, hate shopping, and miss Obama.   Recently, I had to purchase my first pair of readers and my right hip hurts before a rain.

Don't mess with my alphabetized spice drawer.  I'm not really a dog lover, except for my own sweet Poppy.  I refuse to do my children's laundry, only make the bed some days, and my car is often on 'E', but my husband rubs my feet nearly every night anyway.

I'm honored to be invited on this journey, and hope I can live up to expectations to improve my skillsets, speak up for others, empathize more, and understand deeply.  Thank you for your support.

More Info

The crowded, impoverished conditions of South Africa’s townships have been well-documented over the years. Conditions have improved since racial apartheid came to an end in South Africa in the 1990s, but change has not come rapidly enough to many urban settings.

Habitat South Africa has a plan to lift up the people living in these townships —and not just with a house. Habitat aims to provide new, decent housing, yes, but also improved water and sanitation amenities for households throughout the community. Throughout the project, the goal is to create improved, sustainable living environments.

New housing will be made of brick and mortar and meet new standards created by the country’s Department of Human Settlements. Habitat South Africa also intends to improve each family’s access to water and sanitation.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
