About Me

My first H4H'ing was for an alternative spring break in 2003. Raleigh, North Carolina was the spot. I mostly put shingles on a roof and it was awesome. The dirt, the sweat, and the labor that actually put a roof over someone's head (or at least made it weatherproof) generated a feeling unlike any other.

And now, I've accompanied my inspirational parents, whom have been dedicating multiple weeks of each year's vacation time for over a decade to working with H4H, on several trips down to New Orleans to work with the local affiliate, joined the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Build in 2009 to the Mekong Delta, and have begun to dedicate time to my current home city's affiliate, Philadelphia. This will be my first Global Village Trip and I am incredibly excited that I will, again, be joining my parents for what will undoubtedly be an epic labor of love adventure. My mother, Jane, has always wanted to go to Alaska and I can't think of a better way or reason to finally get there!

More Info

Alaska is America’s final frontier. The state’s tall peaks, massive glaciers and more than 300 million acres of wilderness make it an ideal place for those with the pioneer spirit. Yet for the more than 30,000 people living in substandard housing in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, life can be anything but ideal. These families live in over-crowded, under-insulated trailers, apartments, or houses, often without plumbing in the winter, because the high cost of housing makes it difficult for them to afford anything better.

Habitat for Humanity Anchorage has been actively building homes since 1991, working with people who live in substandard conditions throughout the city. To date, Habitat Anchorage has built or renovated more than 70 homes, housing 389 people, including 252 children. Habitat Anchorage welcomes Global Village teams who come to help build safe, decent and affordable homes with similar families in need.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
