More Info

Every day, our world is getting bigger, more competitive, and more centered around creativity and technology. And yet, less than 2 out of 10 California schools adequately provide their students with arts education.

THE GOAL

We’re trying to raise $7,000 to help two teaching artists, Chas and Amani, teach Creative Writing and World Dance to elementary students from January to May of 2013.

Go inside Chas and Amani’s classes in the video above!

With your support, you can help bring Chas and Amani back to these students’ school for the third year in a row.

WHAT WE DO

Performing Arts Workshop delivers pre-K to high school students with free arts education programs like Capoeira, Spoken Word Poetry, and Theatre. Students in our programs learn how to think outside the box, solve problems, and work with others. These are skills that every student should have in the 21st century.

You can spot our teaching artists in schools, community centers, and juvenile halls across the San Francisco Bay Area.

WHAT WILL YOUR DONATION MAKE POSSIBLE?

In Chas's Creative Writing classes, elementary students will

  • learn to express their feelings through poetry
  • expand their vocabulary
  • create original poetry to perform at our year-end student showcase

In Amani's Afro-Peruvian Dance classes, elementary students will

  • learn how to use their bodies to express themselves
  • understand the history of Afro-Peruvian Dance
  • create a dance to perform at our year-end student showcase

With your support, we can also provide Chas and Amani with professional development to ensure high quality teaching. They'll get the tools, resources, and support they need to teach 21st century skills through their art forms.

CLASSROOM RESEARCH

Without critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, a child has little hope of going far in life. Research shows that students in our program:

  • Improve their critical thinking skills

  • Increase their self confidence

  • Are less absent from school and more engaged in learning

  • Do better on standardized English language arts and math tests

OUR STUDENTS: FOCUSING ON AT-RISK YOUTH

For over 47 years, we’ve been dedicated to working with students at risk of academic failure. We focus our resources on working with low-income youth, communities of color, immigrants, special education students, incarcerated youth, and more. Last year, 30% of our students were English Language Learners and 6% were in special education classes.

When were you founded?

1965. We were one of the first nonprofits to place teaching artists in San Francisco public schools.

THE LAST WORD

Kamarea, one of Amani's students from last year, told us,

“Like if I’m stressed, or I’m kind of feeling down, I could just dance and my feelings go away from my spirit while I dance, and it just makes me feel good. When I’m on stage, I feel really confident. It’s like a body language, while you’re dancing. It shows you who you are.”

Right now, we have the opportunity to foster real changes in young students' lives. We hope you can help!

Cheers,

The Performing Arts Workshop Board, Staff, and Teaching Artists
