NC Bandcampers Against HB2

NC Bandcampers Against HB2

From Michael Beaver

We are Bandcamp employees living and working in Raleigh, North Carolina, who realize what affects some of us affects all of us. Hatred and inequality have no business here, and we want to do something to fight it.

"Thank you for your support of Equality NC! Your donation was successful."

After the 7.9% WePay processing fee, our contributions added up to a $1245.04 donation made to Equality NC tonight. Thank you all so much for contributing to this important campaign!

More Info

As North Carolinians, ever since we heard the first reports we've been cringing. So many times now we've had to explain to our coworkers in other parts of the country and the world that this isn't what North Carolina is all about. After discussing ways that Bandcamp could help fight this backwards thinking, we decided that a good way for us to help make a difference is to start a fundraising campaign, promote it via various social presences, and then donate all of the funds to Equality NC.

Since we're employed in the state of North Carolina, a portion of our Bandcamp salaries goes towards paying North Carolina state taxes. This is a small way to help offset any harm we've done via funding given to the state legislature. A self-imposed conscience-tax, if you will.

Why Equality NC?

They're vocal, well organized, have a wonderful and positive message. They're leading the fight. But most importantly, they're committed to building a better future for all North Carolinians.

Update #3

The campaign is all wrapped up now! Thanks so much to all of you who donated. I've initiated all the appropriate mechanics to get the money transferred over to an actual account where I'll be able to send it along to Equality NC, and I'll be sure to update everyone once that's complete. Again, thanks so much for your support and kindness!

Update #2

Lawsuits are flying all around: http://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article76502092.html. And what a choice quote from US Attorney General Loretta Lynch (who just so happens to be a North Carolina native): “You’ve been told that this law protects vulnerable populations from harm – but that just is not the case. Instead, what this law does is inflict further indignity on a population that has already suffered far more than its fair share. This law provides no benefit to society – all it does is harm innocent Americans.”

Unfortunately the antics continue from our legislature, but it is refreshing at least to hear more and more folks here rallying against the direction this state is headed and the leadership that's taking us there. I'm hoping those same people show up to vote this November. Thanks so much for your generosity thus far. We've got 4 days left in the campaign and I'm pretty pleased with what we've managed to raise.

Thanks!
