More Info

World Habitat Day is the one day set aside annually to recognize the basic right of all humanity to adequate shelter, and to encourage grassroots action toward ending poverty housing. The United Nations General Assembly declared in 1985 that the first Monday in October would be World Habitat Day.

On Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, as in years past, Austin Habitat for Humanity joins with our partners around the world to rededicate ourselves to a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Show your support by attending a local World Habitat Day event or supporting this World Habitat Day Campaign.

The impact of adequate housing

  • Adequate shelter is a critical foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty.
  • Adequate housing is vitally important to the health of the world’s economies, communities and populations.
  • Homeownership is a form of wealth accumulation through equity and forced savings from mortgage repayment.
  • Good housing attracts economic investment and development.
  • Decent shelter contributes to thriving school systems, community organizations and civic activism.
  • Safe homes and neighborhoods help to build social stability and security.
