My $2,149 goal has been completed! Thank you for all of the online donations as well as Venmo donations. I was able to donate $350.00 from Venmo donations through the Habitat website as well as another $164.00 from Venmo donations directly to my fundraising page. (I'm working on having the $350.00 donation show up on this page). All of these generous donations total $2,149.

I am still fundraising privately via Venmo to help cover the $1,500 round trip cost for my flight to Malawi. If you wish to donate through Venmo--my Venmo name is below.

About Me

In November 2019, I will be traveling to Lilongwe, Malawi on a Habitat for Humanity Global Village trip, to build a home for orphans.

In Malawi, poverty is prevalent and about four out of five families live in substandard homes with little hope of ever being able to afford a decent house. A typical village hut is built of mud bricks with a dirt floor and grass-thatched roof, which requires frequent repairs. These conditions put the families at high risk of all kinds of diseases with leaky roofs making the house damp and mud floors attracting insects. There are about 1.5 million orphans and vulnerable children in Malawi out of a population of 18.57 million and approximately 21,000 new units are needed every year for the next 10 years to meet housing demand – this far exceeds supply.

Habitat Malawi seeks to help build 1) decent shelter, improving the lives of orphans and other vulnerable groups of people; 2) water, sanitation and hygiene, or WASH, systems to improve the sanitation status and wellbeing of slum dwellers; and 3) disaster risk reduction and response projects to improve access to better and safer shelter for families living in areas prone to disasters.

I am so excited for this trip as it will be my first trip to the continent of Africa as well as my first big trip outside of the United States. I look forward to immersing myself in a new culture, exploring Malawi, and meeting new people. Please consider making a contribution to help the project. Any size donation will greatly help. I appreciate all your generosity and support!

More Info

Malawi is a country of immense beauty — and extreme poverty. It is one of the least developed countries in the world. The economy is predominately agricultural and is dependent on substantial international assistance.

Seventy-five percent of the population lives on less than US$2 a day. Because of the widespread poverty, four out of five families live in substandard homes, with little hope of ever being able to afford a decent house. A typical village hut is built of mud and daub with a dirt floor and thatched roof. The conditions put families at high risk of disease.

Habitat for Humanity Malawi, established in 1986, constructs houses of burnt clay bricks, concrete floors and tile roofs. More than 5,000 houses have been built so far. By providing improved housing to families, Habitat Malawi has enhanced lives and reduced the occurrence of malaria, respiratory illnesses and intestinal parasites.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
