Growing Vegetables to Fight Poverty

The villages of Khirusilla, Jatun Pampa, Pajchapata and Kauca need to improve nutrition levels for their families. These four communities around Vacas, Bolivia, are situated high up in the mountains, amidst very difficult terrain. 81 families are looking to build themselves a vegetable garden close to their homes. Each vegetable garden costs $69 to construct. They will grow a variety of vegetables which will provide their children with much needed nutrients. Right now, they eat mainly carbohydrate rich foods such as potato and rice, proteins are virtually missing from their diet. These vegetable gardens are a huge step out of poverty for them.

A Little Background Before You Donate

We know this works! Outreach International has previously implemented a similar project in the neighboring village of Sapilica. Not only were they able to produce a variety of food for their own consumption, they even managed to produce a surplus which is sold at the market providing more income for their families. Their children are feeling stronger due to the increase in nutrition, concentration levels at school have also greatly improved. Due to the fact that these communities are located very high in the mountain region, cold weather can inhibit growth of vegetables during the winter months. As part of this project, a structure similar to a greenhouse will be built to protect the gardens all year round.

Is the Project Sustainable?

Yes! These communities aren't looking for handouts. Each family will provide the stone for the walls and the labor to build them. They need our help for other materials such as the plastic for the roofs.
