For over 100 years, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, (NPHC), and also called the Divine Nine, have worked to create leaders, to promote communication, and increase civic engagement on the Bloomington campus.  Help us honor their enduring contribution with a financial gift towards the construction of Divine Nine recognition plots at IU.

Why Plots?

Like many black Greek traditions, the development of plots can be traced to the days of slavery.  In the months following the end of the Civil War, confiscated Confederate land was divided into 40-acre plots for homestead development.  The NPHC constructs plots to symbolically and physically represent each organization's presence on campus and to give alumni and current members a location for reflection and celebration.

Where Will the Plots Be Located?

Nine limestone plot structures (one for each of the nine chapters) and a Unity structure representing the NPHC will be placed in an arc along the sidewalk leading up to the entrance of the Neal-Marshall Black Culture Center.  The plaza will be a tribute to the generations of alumni who have served Indiana University and the Bloomington community as members of NPHC organizations.

Why Give?

From the outside, a plot is an area that acknowledges a fraternity or sorority's existence.  From within, a plot acknowledges the struggle, faith and power of former educated people of color (that look like me) who modeled perseverance, which led to excellence." - Alyssa Walker, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Since NPHC organizations don't have chapter houses on campus, these plots will serve as a structure so our presence will be planted in the ground of IU.  It is a symbol of all the hard work and perseverance members from the past and present have planted in the Indiana University community.  These plots will show that not only are NPHC organizations valuable to our campus, but they are a vital part of IU history, and that is something that should be acknowledged." - Mercedes M. Jones, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
