BVSPCA Providing Care for 32 Severely Neglected Animals Seized from a Residence in Seaford, Delaware

The Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) took 31 dogs and one cat into its care on Sunday, October 8, 2017, following their seizure by Delaware Animal Services (DAS) at a residence in Seaford, Delaware. Following a tip about a property with neglected animals in the Seaford area, DAS executed a search warrant on Sunday and found approximately 43 dead dogs and took into custody another 32 animals, including 31 dogs and a cat. The 32 surviving animals were transferred into the care of the BVSPCA at the scene.

Of the animals seized, five dogs in stable condition were immediately transferred to the BVSPCA Georgetown Campus for evaluation and care, and the BVSPCA took 27 severely ill animals for emergency veterinary care, where one had to be euthanized. All surviving animals are now being cared for at the BVSPCA Georgetown Campus.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are forthcoming from the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare (OAW). Meanwhile, the animals will receive ongoing care at the BVSPCA Georgetown Campus. All suffer severe emaciation, along with other medical issues resulting from their neglect.

The dogs include a variety of small dog breeds, such as Bichon Frise, Shih-Tzu, Pekingese and terriers, along with two standard poodles. They range in age from two to ten years old.

“Conditions at the property were horrific,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA CEO. “It’s remarkable to see how friendly and trusting these dogs remain after everything they’ve been through. We’re doing everything in our power to help them recover and hope to have the opportunity to help them find loving forever families.”

The BVSPCA asks for the community’s help meeting the significant cost of medical care for the survivors.  Donations can be made by mail to: Brandywine Valley SPCA, 22918 Dupont Boulevard, Georgetown, DE 19947.

Update #4

Lots of news to report! Another five dogs just went up for adoption at our Georgetown Campus, plus the single kitty rescued went up for adoption this weekend. And five dogs previously medically cleared are now in forever homes. This photo shows a beautiful moment during Gracie’s adoption.

The remaining dogs in our care continue to make good progress, and we hope they too can find loving homes soon. We’re now almost a month into helping these dogs recover, so your kind donation has gone a long way to making that care possible!

Update #2

We’re pleased to report an arrest has been made in this case. The Delaware Office of Animal Welfare (OAW) arrested Donald Eilander of Seaford. He was arraigned on 449 charges, including felony animal cruelty.

Meanwhile, intense care and treatment continues at our Georgetown Campus. This beautiful girl in the photo is Sally, whose “before” photo you saw on our fundraising page as the first photo. We’re looking forward to helping Sally and the other survivors in this horrific case recover and find forever families. Thank you for making that possible with your generous donation!

Update #1

We’re so grateful to all of you who contributed to help care for the 32 animals we rescued, followed by the 60 cats from another home over this week. Seeing the suffering can be overwhelming, but we’re focused on their care and opening up what’s possible for them in their future.

The dogs have all been groomed, which made a huge difference in their quality of life. The focus now is on their special feeding program to help them gain weight. Here's a photo of one of the dogs after grooming. The weight was truly lifted off their shoulders. Thank you for making this difficult and important work possible!
