From Giovanni Ramos

I am cycling 400 miles to benefit the homeless island dog population of the Turks and Caicos through Potcake Place, a dog rescue whose mission of compassion is to help these pups find a forever family.

And this little guy, Seal, will be joining our family!

Goal:

Organizing, riding and fundraising for the potcake population of the Turks and Caicos Islands utilizing the Fundly App. The goal is to raise $400.00 for biking 400 miles during the month of June.

Overview:

My family has been visiting the Turks and Caicos Islands for the past four years. It has become our home away from home. We have grown to love everything about the Island from the pristine beaches to the crystal clear water, local food and culture and the welcoming nature of the Belongers and Ex-Pats. However, one of my favorite places to visit on the Island is Potcake Place.

Potcake Place is a sanctuary for the Turks and Caicos Islands indigenous dog population, affectionately called, Potcakes. It is a non-profit organization that is run solely by caring and dedicated volunteers and exists only because of the time and money provided by its' sponsors. The Potcake is a mixed-breed dogs found on several Caribbean Islands and the Turks and Caicos Islands certainly have their share. They are named after the caked peas and rice that would be found at the bottom of the family cooking pot. The early settlers of the island would feed this potcake to their dogs and thus they received their nick name. They are characterized as intelligent, loyal, calm, and resilient pups. I can tell you from first hand experience, they certainly are. My family enjoys spending time at Potcake Place visiting the dogs and taking them out for daily walks and socialization every time we make a trip to the island.

Under the direction of Jane Parker-Rauw, Potcake Place became a registered charity in 2004 in Turks and Caicos to rescue the stray potcake population that was overwhelming the island. Because the island is dependent on tourism, officials had considered the dogs nuisances and would poison or shoot them to keep the numbers down fearing that their presence would scare the tourists. Potcake Place stepped in to rescue the lovable and loyal pups. They have been rescuing the potcakes, caring for them, providing them with vaccinations and basic health care and adopting them out to families across the United States and Canada. 500 dogs are adopted out of Potcake Place each year!

The need to aid in the local effort to manage the potcake population has risen since Hurricanes Irma and Maria barreled through the area last year. All of the money raised will go directly to Potcake Place for the care of the stray potcake population.

Update #5

It's hard to believe the month of June has come to a close. With your support, I was able to present the 400 dollar donation to Ms. Jane Parker-Rauw and Ms. Lynn Robinson of Potcake Place K-9 Rescue. Although my 400 miles have come to a close, the hard work and dedication of the volunteers at Potcake Place continues. Their energy and compassion for the island dogs is truly remarkable. Thank you all for a successful campaign.

Update #2

Nearing the half-way point at 184 miles. Logging in a lot of miles on the Peloton when the weather isn't cooperative. Thanks to all the donors and supporters. More pups at TCI need good homes, so I'm going to keep pedaling.
