Two people were hospitalized and a portion of northbound I-35 was shut down for several hours late last night into early this morning following a major accident on the north end of the city. Just before 11pm, first responders were called to the 48-hundred block of northbound I-35 near Conrad/Kohlenberg Road where they found three passenger cars damaged and an 18-wheeler that had rolled onto its side and skidded to a stop on the main lanes of the interstate. Preliminary police reports indicate that the driver of a Lexus (a man in his 30’s) had slowed down or stopped in the middle lane of the highway when an 18-wheeler came up on the vehicle. The big rig tried to swerve to miss the Lexus, but still hit the vehicle, then hit the retaining wall, causing the truck to roll over on its side where it slid for 80 to 100 yards before finally coming to a stop under the Conrad/Kohlenberg overpass. Then, an orange Jeep driven by an 18-year old female, came upon the accident and the driver got out to help the driver of the Lexus when a blue Kia Serento struck the Lexus, injuring the Good Samaritan. She, and the driver of the Lexus, were both taken to University Hospital by New Braunfels EMS. The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured in the crash. But his rig, which was fully loaded with pallets of coal, started leaking oil and then later gasoline as crews tried to right the truck in order to clear the scene. It took several hours, until about 3am, o finally stop the leaks and get the big rig off the highway. The investigation into what caused the crash is still underway.
On Tuesday, March 3, 2015 Anna came up on a bad accident on I-35. She stopped to help and was hit. She sustained some very serious injuries. Anna will be out of work for at least a month and could really use some extra help with medical expenses, cost of living, and other monthly bills.
