I'm dedicating this build to my cousin Dick Martin who lived an amazing life which included serving in the Peace Corps in El Salvador in 1974; he passed to eternal life in October

About Me

I went on my first Thrivent Builds Worldwide trip in August 2012 with my daughter Allison. It was a wonderful experience working in a beautiful but desperately poor community in El Salvador. The house we worked on was owned by a single mom whom we never saw because she worked from early in the morning until early evening. The children were there most of the time because school is only part time. Check out the photo of the school bus in the jungle! Another favorite is the high school age girl ironing her uniform as we dug the septic tank in the same room. We had a great experience working with our team members who we had never met before. I quickly knew that in the future I wanted to share this experience with more people. In May 2013, I completed training to be a Habitat Global Village Leader. The first trip had to be a return to the same community in El Salvador where Allison & I first built. So this is that trip! We can't wait to see the children, adults and homes of Getsemani, and bring hope to another family!

From Michigan with love!

We hear God's call to show the love we experience through Jesus Christ by serving others.  We look forward to partnering with hard working poor families to improve their health, happiness and life with a safe, decent home. We'll have lots of fun as we serve together, and come to know God in deeper ways.

The poor of El Salvador

Life is hard in El Salvador.  Civil war raged for 12 years. Economic hardship and the aftermath of frequent natural diasters create a tough reality for nearly 6 million people in this small densely populated country in Central America. Almost 3 million Salvadorans live in inadequate housing.

We are excited to be part of the amazing Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity Program!  Thrivent Financial generously sponsors our team and sends money directly to Habitat for Humanity-El Salvador. We feel we are "blessed to be a blessing" as we are supported by Thrivent Financial to do this work with Habitat for Humanity.   For more information about Thrivent Builds Worldwide visit http://www.thriventbuilds.com/

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
