More Info

Lockdown Cabaret is a weekly Instagram belly dance show that showcases Middle Eastern dance around Australia. The show seeks to connect the national belly dance community in a time of uncertainty and physical distancing.

Donations to the Lockdown Cabaret Future fund will be used to support an in-person event for the whole community to enjoy post-physical distancing.

Our initial goal is to raise $2000 dollars to back an in-person show. The funds will be used to support venue hire, lighting, and professional photography for a show at a major city on the East coast - major contenders are Melbourne or Sydney. For people who can't make the show in person, we are hoping to live stream the show and have viewing parties in each state! Sadly, due to national uncertainty due to COVID-19 we can't get more specific about the details just yet!

Note: If we do not reach the initial goal of $2000, donations will be divided and distributed to dancers who have performed in Cabaret Lockdown over its lifetime.

UPDATE - 27th April 2020

Due to the widespread support that Lockdown Cabaret is receiving we are fully committed to running a community festival that will be both physically and digitally accessible. Our planning will accommodate multiple scenarios based on evolving public health advice.

To support struggling dance studios, each state will have a host studio where workshop(s) and performances will be delivered and live-streamed to a network of linked studios. People unable to attend physically will be able to access workshop and performance content online.

At this point we plan for workshops will be hosted in SA, NSW and VIC. Other host studios may be included from QLD, WA, NT, ACT and TAS.

The Lockdown Cabaret committee is being supported by an advisory group, including Rachel (NSW), Josie (VIC), and Sally (TAS).

In recognition of the public health and economic impacts of COVID-19, and population distribution of Australia, the Lockdown Cabaret Future Fund will be dedicated to sponsoring dancers to attend an in-person community dance festival at the conclusion of physical distancing. The challenges of COVID-19 and population distribution of Australia mean that physically attending festivals is privileged – we want to ensure that the funds are being used to equalise opportunities of dancers who have been impacted by COVID-19. Sponsorship to attend Lockdown Cabaret Future Fund will be decided via a transparent application process by the Lockdown Cabaret committee and advisory group. A list of selection criteria will be provided soon.

We are confident we will achieve our goal of $2000 to provide sponsorships to dancers.

FAQ

Who are the Lockdown Cabaret organisers?

The Lockdown Cabaret organisers are Laila, Kadia, and Tara.

Why did you establish the Lockdown Cabaret Future Fund?

Lockdown Cabaret Vol. 1 encouraged viewers to go to the BeyondBlue website to donate to mental health support efforts. At no point did Lockdown Cabaret collect funds on behalf of BeyondBlue.

Feedback indicated that it would be preferred for Lockdown Cabaret to be dedicated to build an event for the future that the community could look forward to. As a result, we created the Lockdown Cabaret Future Fund through fundly.com.

The fund will be be used to support and nurture a vibrant and connected national dance community by provide a sponsorship program to dancers attending the Lockdown Cabaret community festival, both digitally and physically.

How is the Lockdown Cabaret Future Fund benefiting the dance community?

In recognition of the public health and economic impacts of COVID-19, and population distribution of Australia, the Lockdown Cabaret Future Fund will be dedicated to sponsoring dancers to attend an in-person dance festival in 2021. This will enable dancers to attend the festival, either digitally or online, that may not otherwise be able to. Sponsorship will be decided based on a transparent application process with the Lockdown Cabaret committee and brains trust.

Are the organisers financially profiting from this Lockdown Cabaret Future Fund?

No. The organisers are not profiting in any financial way from the Future Fund. Laila, Kadia and Tara are volunteering approximately 30 hours of their time each week to organising Lockdown Cabaret out of a desire to create a stronger and more connected dance community.
