About Me

I was 19 years old. She was 72 and just had surgery the day before. As I pushed her down the hallway in Green Bay’s Bellin Hospital in her wheelchair, I asked about her family. She said she didn’t have any left, only a few friends who lived far away. I turned into the hospital’s “salon”, lowered her head down into the shampoo bowl and began washing her hair. She said to me, “Why are you doing this? You’re young, it’s Saturday, and you could be doing anything else.” It wasn’t odd to me at all why I was there, so I replied to her, “I am passionate about volunteering and helping others and love being able to share my gifts with others who are in need.” That was a long time ago, and my core value hasn’t changed. When this Habitat Global Village trip was presented to me, I was excited, nervous, scared all at the same time. I’ve never built a house before. (Decorated….yes. Built….No). When I finally made the decision to join, it was the challenge of doing something I’d never done before that pushed me to say yes AND the opportunity to help a family in need. If you are in a position to help support this endeavor financially – THANK YOU for your tax-deductible commitment. If you’re not, please say a few extra prayers for our team of 17 as we travel halfway around the world to support a family. The cost of $1,300 covers my lodging, food, build materials, bus and water transfers to the build site. I will be covering the cost of my airfare. With much love and appreciation, Lisa

Housing Need

Poverty remains largely a rural phenomenon in the Philippines, but as the country urbanizes, poverty has become more evident in towns and cities. By 2025, more than half of the urban dwellers will be poor.  In Metro Manila, more than 126,000 families live in slums, often on exposed riverbanks, garbage dumps and alongside polluted highways and railroads.

Since 1988, Habitat for Humanity Philippines has played an active role in providing decent, durable and affordable housing for families in need. Through a network of project offices in rural and urban areas, Habitat Philippines has built and repaired tens of thousands of homes. Habitat has also assisted more than 5,000 families displaced by typhoons, fire and landslides.

Habitat Philippines uses mainly a “Building in Stages” housing microfinance model for the construction of small core houses. Once the initial mortgage has been repaid, home partners can take out another mortgage to add new rooms or facilities. Through its urban renewal program, Habitat Philippines also builds efficient and affordable medium-rise condominium-type structures in areas where land is scarce and expensive. In addition to homes, Habitat Philippines builds classrooms with the help of various corporate supporters.

Thrivent and Habitat

From the first nail to the last, building a home with Habitat for Humanity International is a profound experience for all involved. It’s not just sticks and blocks. It is tears and smiles, borne of hard work and faith. And it’s the knowledge that you’ve helped change lives.

That’s why Thrivent Financial works with Habitat. And it’s why we want to do more. Much more. Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity engages congregations, Thrivent chapters and members, Habitat affiliates, and individuals from across the United States and around the world to build hundreds of homes per year with families in need, provide mission trips for Christian outreach in local and foreign communities, and directly reduce poverty housing and homelessness around the world.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
