More Info

We're celebrating the beauty of 50 years of L'Arche International this year–remembering how a simple movement rooted in love and vulnerability has the power to change the world with its sign of hope! L'Arche Chicago is also making a big move this year with new housing! Our long search has turned up the first of the two homes needed to move the community to more adequate and accessible housing.

Really Good News

We have received an anonymous and generous matching gift, doubling all donations up to $25,000 from now until the L'Arche Chicago Anniversary Banquet on September 14, 2014! The $50,000 or more that we will raise will help L'Arche Chicago to purchase the house, to maintain the financial stability of the community, and to begin the search for the second urgently needed house. Read about our Jubilee Anniversary Banquet in September and other L'Arche events.

Why Now?

In the last four years, L'Arche Chicago has grown to two full homes with 8 core-members (adults with developmental disabilities), 6 live-in assistants, 4 live-out relief assistants, and 3 full time administrative staff persons. The need for new housing is urgent. Our present homes are two-flats, situated on a busy thoroughfare in a forgotten section of far-west Chicago. Angel House is in need of major costly repairs; we rent Interfaith House for a hefty sum and are there month to month since it may be foreclosed upon; and both homes have inadequate accessibility options for the changing needs of our core-members and lack the living areas that allow for the activities of the total community.

At the heart of L’Arche is our shared life together. Choosing a home that reflects our mission to create family-style homes that foster mutual living is absolutely essential to retaining our prophetic character as a sign to the world of the dignity and worth of everyperson, regardless of ability.

For the past several years, our housing committee has been searching for homes that would allow us to live our mission more fully. We are in need of two family-style homes that are well-kept, comfortable, and integrated into the wider community. Here 6-8 people with and without disabilities can share life around the dinner table in a home along a quiet, tree lined street in a safe, stable neighborhood. We need your help to get there!

Please Join Us! Let's Make 50 To Celebrate 50! Help Us Do It!

Remember, for a limited time, every dollar you give means two for L'Arche. So, make the largest tax deductible contribution you can to L'Arche Chicago! And, please pass this on to others who also share your compassionate heart for this worthy cause.

We can also accept checks mailed to our office at: L'Arche Chicago, 1011 Lake Street, Suite 403, Oak Park, IL 60301. (708) 660-1600

Thanks so much for sharing your gifts with those who are gift to us!

"The secret of L'Arche is relationship - meeting people not through the filters of certitudes, ideologies, idealism, or judgments, but heart to heart, listening to people with their pain, their joy, their hope, their history - listening to their heart beats." Jean Vanier, Founder of L'Arche

50 Years | $50K

Why L'Arche?

Everyone's aware of the tremendous violence in the world today. You don't need to go very far to see that there's a desperate cry for peace that we all share. Peace comes as we share our lives with others. Sometimes, it's when we share our lives with those who have no one else, who have come to a place of loneliness or isolation because of being different that this time of sharing means working towards peace.

L'Arche is celebrating 50 years of sharing lives. People with and without intellectual disabilities coming together, as one, to celebrate a unity that recognizes and celebrates difference as something we can share with one another, and still remain in harmony. Difference in ability, in religion, in nationality, in language, in being male or female, it's all about sharing our gifts!

We'd like you to join us in celebrating the diversity of difference, to share your life, your resources, with those who are in need of friendship.

At L'Arche Chicago, friendship is at the heart of our community life. We don't live together as provider and client, we live together in friendship of two people, offering the peace that comes with knowing love that affirms one of the most basic needs we all share.

Thursday, August 14th at 7pm is our monthly Community Night. We'll be spending time in prayer, fellowship, and sharing some little treats. Come join us at 1117 S. Austin Blvd. in Chicago, IL to meet and spend time with L'Arche Chicago!

THANKS TO ALL WHO HAVE GIVEN! WE'RE APPROACHING $2,500 IN TOTAL GIFTS WITH OUR MATCHING DONOR! TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND HELP US RAISE THE $25,000 NEEDED TO MAKE $50,000 FOR 50 YEARS!
