Just For Julie

We did it!

Thank you to everyone who supported my fundraiser, we raised almost $10,000. Wow! Overwhelming. All those lovely generous thoughts definitely kept me going...  What an amazing day! Watch froze at mile 8 (a moment of sheer panic), windy (but not as bad as I feared), then forget the wall, thought I was going to die at around mile 22. Otherwise great! Burger, fries and beer afterwards was manna indeed... Very happy with my time, 3:38. I was 106 out of 2479 women in my age group 45-49, and in the top 5% of all female runners.

You all gave such focus to my training, so thank you again for all your kindness,

Lucy

If you know me, you will know I love to run. Last year having been treated for breast cancer, my personal choice was to distance myself from the disease. My mantra then and now is "I may have cancer, but cancer doesn't have me."

This April, Julie Oyen, my dear friend and neighbor was also diagnosed with breast cancer, and I suddenly found new meaning in the strangeness of the past year. We now have each other's backs, warriors we like to call ourselves. Julie has undergone a double mastectomy and now faces 3 months of chemo. She approaches her "personal marathon" with such humor, grace and bravery. I know she will be fine, but the next few months will be incredibly tough on her and her busy family. With her medical bills piling up, I decided to dedicate my run to her. The NYC Marathon's 26.2 miles provides a huge personal challenge for me,  and a great opportunity to help.

"Just for Julie" is the cause, and my goal is to get friends and family to sponsor me, or just become a supporter of the campaign. Good thoughts are so valuable too.

Join me in the race of a lifetime (figuratively not literally).

Thank you so much,

Lucy
