From Julia Carlin

I’m fundraising money to help the people of South Africa acquire decent housing and shelter. Donations will contribute to the funds incurred during the build and go to Habitat.

Update #1

I've hit 10% of my goal - only $1,957 more to go until I've hit my goal so I will be able to get the opportunity to help build a shelter for those who cannot build themselves in a rural community in South Africa.

Very few employment opportunities exist making it very difficult for people to find work. Most of the community members live in substandard mud structures which have become usage and unhealthy places to reside.

Our work will be empowering, even if we just impacted one life, it would be worth all the effort in the world. But the fact is its entire communities that we seek to empower.

Please help share this fundraiser! I have less than $2000 left to raise but to be perfectly honest I've never really done this before.

About Me

I'm a 30-year-old single mother looking to make something more out of my life than everything I've ever known thus far. I want to know that I made a difference in the lives of vulnerable populations. I'm looking to take a trip across the world to help people have shelter. I've done a few builds with my local chapter of Habitat-for-Humanity in NYC already and I'm excited to do something even greater and to inspire others! I want to help empower communities by partnering with local people from South Africa and building with them.

11 Reasons Why I Am Helping Build Houses in Umgababa, South Africa:

1.     Helping families in need

2.     Knowing I made a difference

3.     Experience new things

4.     A sense of accomplishment

5.     Give my life new purpose

6.     Do something meaningful

7.     Learn new skills

8.     Inspire others

9.     Become familiar with new cultures

10.   Help others in times of need

11.   Meet new people who value giving back

More Info

The crowded, impoverished conditions of South Africa’s townships have been well-documented over the years. Conditions have improved since racial apartheid came to an end in South Africa in the 1990s, but change has not come rapidly enough to many urban settings.

Habitat South Africa has a plan to lift up the people living in these townships —and not just with a house. Habitat aims to provide new, decent housing, yes, but also improved water and sanitation amenities for households throughout the community. Throughout the project, the goal is to create improved, sustainable living environments.

New housing will be made of brick and mortar and meet new standards created by the country’s Department of Human Settlements. Habitat South Africa also intends to improve each family’s access to water and sanitation.

Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International

Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
