Welcome to the fund-raising site for the restoration of Scott and Amy Cohen’s home. As many of you know, the entire interior of their single-story ranch in Bellmore was destroyed by flood waters associated with Hurricane Sandy. Not a single room was spared, and everything in the house must be replaced, ranging from the floor boards, to the walls, to the mechanical systems, even the toilets. A lifetime of possessions was destroyed as well, including all of their furniture and appliances and most of their clothing.

The housing allowance provided for under Scott and Amy’s homeowners’ insurance was scant. After living in a motel for three weeks, Scott, Amy, their daughter Sydney and - with the school holidays - now Ariel, are split up and living with friends and family. And just when Scott and Amy thought that things could not possibly get worse, they did. Scarcely a month after losing their home and everything in it, Scott was diagnosed with acute leukemia. He is still in the hospital as of this date. In order to focus on his health, Scott was forced to make the difficult decision to close his law practice, leaving his family with only Amy’s income to make ends meet.

The Cohen family has resided in Bellmore for more than 20 years, and they have always been pillars of the community. They have been active in their temple and in community affairs, as well as in the Lynbrook School District where Amy has taught for 27 years. Scott is also a graduate of the Lynbrook schools, class of 1982.

Scott, Amy and the girls need and deserve our support. As you probably know, there are numerous expenses that neither insurance nor FEMA aid will cover entirely, if at all, and they have uncovered medical expenses as well. That is why their friends and colleagues decided to create this website. We want to give this family some relief from the overwhelming financial burden they are under, and show them that their friends and the communities they have helped so much for so many years want to give back to them. Please make a contribution today, and help these wonderful people get back on their feet.

We also welcome you to attend a fund-raiser being held on the family’s behalf. It will take place on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm at Vamps Club, located at 1500 Newbridge Road, North Bellmore NY 11710 (at the intersection of Newbridge Road and Broad Street, next door to the fire house). Help support this worthy cause and lift the family’s spirits by enjoying an evening of good food and great company.
