- Becoming a regular Event Speaker with Black and Pink
- Graduating form the Employment Services Program at The Fortune Society
- Attending job readiness classes at Riseboronyc (RB Empowerment)

There have been many positive developments regarding Egypt's search for longerm housing, and we hope to have good news soon! Until then, please continue to share Egypt's Fund and send her all your love!

About Miss Egypt Dior

Egypt was born and raised in Bedstuy, Brooklyn. In early 2018 Egypt was released on parole after nearly 20 years of incarceration. Like many previously incarcerated folks, Egypt has struggled over the past year to secure income, housing, and general safety, especially as a black transgender woman. She has faced discrimination from employers, landlords, and non-profit organizations. After being harassed and fired from H&M in the spring of 2018 on the premises of her gender identity, Egypt has struggled to find longterm employment due to unstable housing, and vice versa. With this new sublet, she’s excited to finally have time and safety to fully dedicate herself to longerm sustainability.

Community Support and Celebrating Success

Egypt has secured housing from January 2019 until July 2019! A friend has very generously offered Egypt a studio apartment to sublet at a fraction of the unit’s market rate; only $600/month, all utilities included. After experiencing transphobia, racism, and harassment in her previous apartment, we're relieved to know she will be living safely in a private studio for the upcoming months.

With community support and safe housing over the past month, Egypt has already made huge steps towards longterm stability. She is re-enrolled in the Paralegal Studies program at Mildred Elly and begun professional development courses at RiseBoro Empowerment. Through Atlas at the RB Empowerment Center Egypt also received a housing voucher for city subsidized housing and has begun the process of learning how to utilize this voucher. We are endlessly grateful for the opportunities secure housing provides, especially when healing from trauma. None of these accomplishments would have been possible without community!

Egypt's Future - Liberation, Autonomy, Sustainability

We are fundraising money for Egypt’s rent and living expenses until July 2019 so during the interim she is free to continue working towards her goals for longerm stability. Our total goal of $7,300 will cover the following for 7 months:

  • $600/mo rent

  • $135 monthly unlimited metrocard

  • $50 phone bill

  • $200 food

  • $350 moving costs (1 time expense)

For the first three months, Egypt’s goals are:

  • January: move into sublet, secure housing voucher, enroll in professional development program at RB Empowerment, continue job hunt following seasonal employment at UPS.

  • February: re-secure benefits which were withheld during government shut-down, work with the Fortune Society to utilize housing voucher, re-enroll in Paralegal Studies program, continue job hunt.

  • March: graduate from professional development program at RB Empowerment and begin job placement processes, continue Paralegal Studies program, continue job hunt.

During this time we ask community to come together in supporting Egypt's living costs so she can start a new chapter of her life feeling empowered, safe, and loved <3

Update #4

Black Trans Women Deserve Love, Respect, & RESOURCES!!

Happy Pride Month everyone! June is a very special month for the queer community, and this year is extra special as it is the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. The Stonewall Riots were started in 1969 by black and brown transgender women protesting police violence against the queer community. Now 50 years later, black transgender women are still brutalized, incarcerated, and murdered at disproportionate and alarming rates.

This June let’s celebrate pride month by providing tangible, life-saving support for black trans women in our communities. Every donation to Egypt’s Housing & Survival Fund will help her pay for rent, food, transportation, and cell service so she can focus on her paid internship at GMHC and searching for long-term housing. Resources keep black trans women SAFE, and Egypt deserves safety as much as anyone. Let’s work together to give Egypt the resources she needs and prove #BlackTransWomenMatter today, tomorrow, and every day <3

Update #3

CONGRATULATIONS EGYPT on graduating from The Fortune Society!!!

This past week Egypt graduated from the Employment Services program at The Fortune Society! The Fortune Society supports previously incarcerated people through the process of reentry by providing food, housing, education, and job-readiness training. For two weeks Egypt participated in the Employment Services program and is now ready to begin her paid internship, which will prepare her for future employment and job placement. More information about The Fortune Society can be found in the link below.

We are INCREDIBLY grateful for the knowledgeable and compassionate staff at The Fortune Society and for all of YOU who made it possible for Egypt to participate! Your donations provided her with transportation, food, a functioning phone, and housing, all of which are crucial during an intensive 80 hour program. Without you Egypt would not have had the opportunity to participate!

An especially huge thank you to everyone who’s committed to being a monthly donor. Please donate if you’d like to keep supporting Egypt through her internship and into the job placement process. We are also still looking for longterm housing where she can utilize her housing voucher, and in the meantime your donations ensure she has a safe place to live.

Thank you again everyone! Only a few short months ago graduating from a program like this seemed impossible with all the obstacles racism, sexism, and transphobia throw in Egypt’s way. Collective action is the only way we will liberate each other! Community support makes dreams and progress possible!

Every dollar is literally life-saving; please continue to support Egypt as she continues her journey towards longterm stability and liberation! #BlackTransLivesMatter
