More Info

The Turner Parker Veterans Foundation was founded in April 2014 to provide direct assistance to Veterans unable to get help from any government agency. We hold an non-profit EIN (47-1299880) issued by the IRS and our application for tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code is pending. The Veteran the Foundation is rising funds to assist has been a student at Kirkwood CC for the past 4 semesters, using Pell Grants and other federal financial aid.

During the summer the college determined that the Vet had been over paid in the Fall 2013 term and their student account was debited for the over payment. Since Department of Education rules do not allow federal financial aid funds (Pell Grant and loans) to be used to pay past obligations to the college, the outstanding debt of $589 must be paid to the college before this Vet can receive their current Pell Grant & loan funds. The deadline for this repayment is the close of business on 15 September 2014.

The Vet was referred to the Foundation as a last resort and we agreed to make an attempt to raise the funds using social media.  The board of directors, "the board", voted that any funds disbursed directly to Kirkwood CC on the Vet's behalf will be considered a grant and not require repayment. Any funds remaining will be retained by the Foundation for future assistance efforts.

In the interest of FULL DISCLOSURE, the founder and one member of the board of directors are students at Kirkwood Community College. The Veteran receiving the grant was not known to either of these parties prior to the board's vote on the matter. The board also voted not to disclose the name of the Veteran receiving assistance to avoid embarrassment to them or their family.

Thanks for your assistance to this Veteran in need.UPDATE:  September 17, 2014OUR VET GETS TO STAY ENROLLED!

However due to Department of Education policy her Pell Grants funds still cannot be released until all past debts to the school are settled. So we are still asking your assistance with ANY amount your are willing to donate.

I also would to thank everyone who stepped up to help this Vet mom!If you like complete detail check our blog post!

Our Veteran Gets to Stay Enrolled!

On Monday afternoon meeting was held between Board of Directors of the Turner Parker Veterans Foundation and the administration of Kirkwood CC. At that meeting a $4600 towards our Veterans balance was given the college, leaving a balance of a little over $800. OUR VET GETS TO STAY ENROLLED!

However due to Department of Education policy her Pell Grants funds still cannot be released until all past debts to the school are settled. So we are still asking your assistance with ANY amount your are willing to donate.

I also would to thank everyone who stepped up to help this Vet mom!
