About Me
I see volunteering abroad as a way for me to pursue my lust for adventure, and improve my own life while also lifting up other’s lives. I’ve found that the most memorable parts have almost nothing to do with the destination or the sights seen. In High School I traveled to Italy (with my school) and for two of the days there we helped clean and maintain neglected parts of the monastery we were staying in. I remember that time vividly, and fondly. But the cathedrals, the ‘sights’ are all a blur, and don’t mean much to me. With Habitat for Humanity I’ll be doing more than cleaning up a monastery garden, I’ll be helping give people a place to live. The impact of my volunteering effort shall be clear and physically manifested; I can see that it made a difference. I will volunteer with Habitat for Humanity this year regardless, but this Myanmar project has captured my heart. It is one of the more extensive and longer projects open to participation. Meaning I get to spend more time building and experiencing Myanmar. It is also a place whose culture and life I know little of, but I am very interested and excited to learn about. If you could help send me there, your contribution will not be without my gratitude, I am very thankful for the opportunity to volunteer with Habitat.

The housing need in Myanmar
Myanmar is among the poorest countries in Asia with one in four people living below the national poverty line. Most of the poor live in rural areas which also tend to be affected by civil conflict or natural disasters such as forest fires, landslides, floods and storm surges. A 2011 joint survey by UNICEF and the Myanmar government in 24 townships showed that more than 60 percent of the population has access to improved water and sanitation facilities. However, just over one in 10 persons handled water safely before drinking while 85 percent of population still defecated in the open.
How Habitat addresses the need in Myanmar
Since January 2014, HFH Myanmar and its partner World Concern have been working in 11 villages to improve 965 families’ health through water and sanitation facilities such as wells, water points and latrines as well as two rural health centers. Local communities are involved in raising personal hygiene standards and families make decisions to build their own sanitation facilities. In addition, HFH Myanmar has built a cyclone shelter to reduce the risks from future disasters. Help support Habitat for Humanity's vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
