As a dietitian and educator, Susan believes everyone should have access to proper nutrition. That’s why she’s dancing for Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels.
“Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels plays such an important role in the lives of the homebound seniors of Ypsilanti,” said Susan, a member of the local Meals on Wheels Board of Directors since 2016. “I’m proud to use my experience as a dietitian, and now my love of dance, for the betterment of the Ypsilanti community.”
In 2019 Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels served more than 106,000 meals to 335 homebound residents of the Ypsilanti area. In addition to meals delivered six days a week, neighbors in need also received pet food and supplies, non-food essentials from the YMOW Personal Care Pantry and weekly produce deliveries through a partnership with Food Gatherers, where Susan serves on the board of directors.
Every meal delivery doubles as a potentially life-saving wellness check from a YMOW staff member or volunteer. Most YMOW clients live alone. Often, their YMOW delivery person is the only person they will see all day.
Through its CAPABLE program, YMOW is empowering local seniors to live longer, healthier and safer in their own homes. CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place—Advancing Better Living for Elders) equips seniors with the tools they need to remain in their homes for as long as possible Working with a nurse, a social worker, a handy person, a financial advisor and an occupational therapist, seniors work over the course of several months to make lasting changes to themselves and their homes.

Here at Dancing with the Michigan Stars, our mission is to combine our love of dance with community outreach. For the past five years we have been reaching out to our community via our DWTMS fundraising event, through which we donate the proceeds to a local charity. With this year’s format we are going to share the love with an ultimate dance off with funds going to dancer’s choice of organization. The top 2 winners of the night, People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice, will receive a portion of the proceeds from the night as a bonus donation from Dancing with the Michigan Stars to their chosen charity.
