North Side Community School serves a low-income, predominantly African-American neighborhood in north St. Louis City. Young people in these neighborhoods are not acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in school and later life. The early childhood center has addressed the needs of the students of this neighborhood, specifically the need for close and continuous attention to individual students' academic growth and a focus on basic knowledge and skills.
Many students that attend the early childhood center are 1-2 years behind their peers. When Aniya came to North Side she could not write her name, did not know her numbers or alphabet and was not used to being around other children. She had been at home with her Grandmother since she was an infant and rarely received positive interaction. Within 6 months of being at the early childhood center, Aniya was writing her first and last name, counting to 100 and recognizing pre-reading words. She has learned to be around other children and make friends. Her grandmother is amazed at the progress she has made
